I was standing in my living room and almost tripped over Lego blocks. I have been doing this all day long, and I need my days by the beach back. This was my story a few years back, and I was wondering if I would see a white sand beach ever again. Then, Boracay happened to me. Initially, my friends were like, “There are fire dancers everywhere, and the nightlife is lit. What are you going to do with these guys?” My daughter was 5 then, and my sonwas all of 2 years. I was more worried about toilets, cleaning stations, and a clean place for meals.  Boracay impressed me. It is a fusion of high-energy vacation and a laid-back vibe. Yes, it was a bit expensive by the standards of the Philippines, which is one of the cheapest places to travel in the world.  However, it was okay considering the ease I enjoyed while traveling with two kids.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about the unique things to do in Boracay with kids. If you want to explore more of the Philippines, you can check out my guide on things to do in Siquijor.  How To Reach Boracay? Yes, this part was a little tricky for me. The travel involved flights, boats, and buses. It was nothing short of a military operation.  However, all the fatigue goes away when the boat hits the jetty, and the turquoise water appears before the eyes.  Also, Boracay is a good mix of modern structures and traditional island life. You will find air-conditioned malls and fancy malls along with the quintessence of the tropics.  What Are The Best Things To Do In Boracay With Kids?  The calm and shallow waters and car-free zones make Boracay a stress-free destination for parents like me.  Also, the Giant Sand Box or the White Beach offers a natural playground for kids. Here is more about the unique things to do in Boracay with kids. 1. The Ultimate Sand Experience At White Beach  The most beautiful beach in Boracay, White Beach, is enchanting, and where we dedicated most of our time. White beach stretches for 4 kilometers, featuring stunning white sand, and is the island's most bustling area. It has three stations (creatively named Station 1, 2, and 3).  The second location is the primary one where we stayed and relaxed.  I anticipated it would be overcrowded, excessively noisy, and not particularly suitable for families. However, that wasn’t true at all.  It was hectic, but not excessively so, and never noisy in my experience. Our children enjoyed it. If you're searching for activities in Boracay Station 2, you won't need to search for too long. Shops, bars, restaurants, tour desks, and massage parlours are found everywhere. My favorite section was the “beach path,” a wide, sandy walkway that follows the beach and is filled with all the essentials you desire.  I haven't encountered anything similar anywhere else. It was pleasant to enjoy the main strip free of cars and directly on the beach, instead of having the beach obstructed by hotels or filled with vehicle fumes as seen on numerous other popular beaches.  One of my favorite activities on Boracay Island was simply strolling along this pathway. There wasn't a lot of trouble either. While strolling slowly with the kids, we frequently received inquiries about boat tours and purchasing hats, but when I was out alone, very few questions were directed at me, and it was not significant.  Unlike some of the major beach destinations in Asia, such as Bali. Boracay maintains a laid-back island atmosphere, yet offers plenty of activities to partake in. 2. Enjoying The Relaxed Vibe At Bulabog Beach This beach is just a kilometre away from White Beach on the island, yet it seems totally different! Once I departed from the main road, all was still except for the crowing of roosters and the laughter of children.  Rather than resorts and buildings, I observed homes constructed from whatever materials were at hand and meandering paths. It is said to be the least appealing beach to stay at in Boracay (unless you are a kite boarder), and I was amazed to discover how incredibly fantastic I thought it was.  It is stunning, and in any other place, it would be greatly appreciated. Moreover, it was slightly breezy, yet extremely calm, with almost no one present and no traffic sounds.  I was infatuated! Had it not been too late to cancel our lodging at the next place, I would have stayed here for two nights instead. White Beach is more beautiful and may have been better for us, as its central location to everything is crucial with young children.  If I returned, I would remain here. I’d simply ensure I was at the end of the beach facing D’Mall, where there are several restaurants, making it easier to stroll the 500m to D’Mall and return to the main area for activities to enjoy in Boracay with family. 3. Water Activities In Boracay Of course, the primary draws in Boracay relate to the beach and the ocean.  Numerous water activities exist.  The primary activities appear to include island hopping excursions, sunset boat trips, glass-bottomed boat experiences, snorkeling, diving, windsurfing, and kiteboarding, essentially anything related to water! Naturally, there is spending time at the beach. You can rent a boat for a very low price. We completed this task in one day for 1000 pesos in an hour.  It was just a bit more than purchasing a tour and allowed us to choose the timing. S didn’t find this very impressive, likely because she had to sit on netting that was somewhat rough.  They also don’t approach the shore directly, so you have to wade into the water. You can clearly employ them to transport you to any place you prefer. Anyone want a private beach? Here, you can reserve numerous activities in Boracay in advance. 4. Shopping At D’Mall D'Mall is the main shopping district of the island and is truly impressive.  When I learned about it, I pictured many small market stall-like spots, but it's more similar to a large outdoor shopping center featuring small boutiques, trendy eateries, and bars.  In the center, there is a small ferris wheel that is an ideal activity for kids in Boracay.  Numerous massage establishments exist (typically 350 pesos for an hour, comparable prices for manicures and pedicures), excellent restaurants offering various cuisines, trendy bars, and everything required for a pleasant and relaxing experience. We dedicated the majority of our time to eating, swimming in the pool, or playing on the beach. Our primary aim was to unwind and commemorate a significant milestone. Get Your Nails Done Or Have A Massage Doing the nails might not be the initial idea that comes to mind when considering the activities in Boracay, but it certainly was a success for us!  My daughter and I were very pleased to have her nails done. This is another affordable activity in Boracay – it’s a fantastic deal. Best Family Resort In Boracay We suggest utilizing HotelsCombined to discover the top lodging options in Boracay. So, it can schedule housekeeping at your convenience.  Typically, the cleaners tend to come when the children are asleep. We ordered room service a few times.  It was enjoyable and quite affordable. The disadvantage was that this hotel is on the main road, a block away from the beach at Station.  It only took a few minutes to reach the beach (Boracay is small). So, we are close to amenities like the supermarket. 2. Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort And Spa  This is a fantastic choice if you desire a beautiful resort located by the shoreline, away from the noise and chaos!  This upscale resort provides outstanding facilities and is probably the top lodging choice on Boracay Island.  Last time we checked, two children under 12 can stay for free as well. Click here to see the latest prices.  Food In Boracay Eating was one of my favorite activities in Boracay! There are countless excellent food options – you won't struggle to find something you enjoy.  A variety of distinct cuisines exists. Buffets are great during the evening, and the coastline offers a lot of options.  This was excellent for us since it wasn’t significantly pricier than ordering à la carte, as the kids ate free with the buffets. Interestingly, we both enjoyed our greatest steak ever at what appears to be the finest buffet in Boracay.  It was definitely the most expensive one we encountered, but at under $20 and with free admission for our kids, it was absolutely worth it, and we returned again. We ordered room service and had a picnic by the beach. Everyone was pleased with the meal. Getting Around In Boracay We seldom did anything apart from walking. All we might require is nearby, as we are at Station 2. You can flag down tricycles on the main road for 10 pesos, which we did from time to time. Our stroller was not an issue. Keep These Things In Mind Before Your Visit  Everything appears quite inexpensive to us, but we haven't spent a lot of time in other parts of the Philippines so far.  I believe this is likely the best approach, as we might now discover much cheaper options elsewhere, rather than arriving here last and encountering very high prices.  I am aware that we purchased beverages and snacks at the airport for less than at the grocery store here. 1. Accommodation Is Expensive In Boracay  Accommodation is undoubtedly costly.  I searched for the ideal accommodation in Boracay for us. I even cancelled two locations before finally securing the place we chose.  We are investing more in lodging in Boracay than anywhere else, and it is far from being our top hotel. There are definitely less expensive options, but with our children so young, we are quite particular.  Anticipate higher costs here compared to other locations (even though we are currently in peak season, which lasts more than half the year, and the off-season is not ideal for weather). 2. The Supermarkets Have Everything The supermarkets appear to carry nearly everything, including some global items like Weetbix. Regrettably, they lack soy milk.  My son cannot handle dairy, so it’s fortunate that we packed plenty of formula for this exact scenario. Thankfully, there is significantly more formula present here than in Thailand. The laundry was inexpensive and easy to locate. Our nearest one cleans, dries, and folds for under a dollar per kilo. 3. ATMs Can Be A Problem  My main complaint would be the ATMs. As we discovered at the airport, they don’t always function properly.  Following online research, it's common that the maximum withdrawal is 10,000 pesos (almost $250), and standard fees are 200 pesos (around $5). This is lame! Thus, we are utilizing our credit card whenever feasible. All in all, Boracay is amazing!! And receives our collective approval. We feel unhappy about departing. Most of us think of the Nadi resort buffets when we are in Fiji. However, if you want to know the real food and soul of Fuji, you have to be in Suva. It is the “Melting Pot of the Pacific.” So, the food stalls and shops you find here are not tourist traps. With the fragrant smoke of BBQ everywhere, you always crave more. Furthermore, the sweet smell of pineapples and the earthy aroma of turmeric here are addictive. Also, there is a brilliant fusion of cooking techniques here. The food here blends the bold spices of India with the stir-frying technique of Canton. So, in Suva, staying cooped up in the hotel for breakfast would be a waste of time. So, let’s lace up the shoes and eat our way through the real Fiji. For more practical tips on exploring the Fiji capital like a local, you must read my Suva travel itinerary. Stop 1: Morning At Suva Municipal Market  The Suva Municipal Market is the place where you breathe and feel the city. If you have the right Suva market guide and you arrive here by 8 AM, you will find the freshest produce here. Exploring the Municipal Market is also very crucial if you want to explore the culture of Suva. • Try Tropical Fruit Tasting In Suva  The Fiji Gold pineapples are different. These fruits are sweeter and smaller compared to the alternatives found in Western supermarkets.  Other tropical fruits you will find here are Fijian chestnuts or Ivu nuts and Soursop. Soursop has a creamy custard flavor. • The Spicery Head to the spice floor of the market, and it’s okay if you feel sneezy with the aroma of coriander and cumin. Here, you will find authentic Garam Masala, so you can take the spice mix as souvenirs. Also, for the most authentic Fiji experience, get some Kava or Yaqona roots. Kava is the national drink of Fiji. It has an earthy taste and smell, and it’s a little numbing. • Have A Bean Cart Experience  Do you love Indian snacks? You can look for the glass wooden carts. You will find a snack mix or Bhujia here. This snack has fried noodles, peanuts, and peas. It is the ideal Suva snack. These snacks are the Suva Fiji hidden gems when we talk about an authentic food experience. Stop 2: The "Roti Parcel" Lunch  For a backpacker or a solo traveler, the Roti Parcel can be the ultimate convenient food. It tastes delicious, and it is a filling and affordable snack. Have you ever tried handmade Indian Rotis? These are the bases of Roti Parcel. These buttery Rotis are wrapped around a filling of dry curry. The dry curry is usually made of chicken, potato, and pumpkin. It is so convenient that you can do it even when you are on a walk. The Suva Bus Stand is the best area to try these Roti Parcels. There are many small kiosks and "holes-in-the-walls.” These places serve hundreds of Roti Parcels daily. Want to try the freshest Rotis? You must look for places where the queue of the office goers is the longest. Stop 3: The Curry Trail  Indo-Fijian cuisine has Indian spices. However, the dishes here are different. In the food here, you will use more local root vegetables. Furthermore, the dishes are spicier, and various cooking techniques are used in making them. Try eating at the following places to try vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indo-Fijian food. Indiana Curry House & Bar is the best place here to have lamb chops, tandoori chicken, and chicken butter masala. Govinda Vegetarian is the place to have Samosas, Barfi and Gulab Jamun. Stop 4: Indigenous Flavors You Must Try  To understand Fiji, you must eat Lovo (earth oven) style or stews thickened with coconut milk. It is the best local food to try in Suva Fiji. Kanalevu Kitchen or The Old Mill Cottage are the places to try Lovo in Suva. These places have an authentic vibe, and you will feel like being in your grandma’s kitchen. Another indigenous delicacy is Kokoda. This is Fiji’s take on ceviche. You can marinate the Spanish Mackarel in lime juice and then serve it with onions and chillies, and of course, a bowl of fresh coconut cream. The combination is heavenly, and it has the right balance of flavor punch and texture. Now, it’s getting really grand. Rourou Mutton is the ultimate Fijian comfort food. In this dish, the Taro leaves (Rourou) are simmered. After a while, they have a spinach-like consistency. You can cook tinned fish or mutton in this mix. Also, you must add plenty of coconut milk for the rich, creamy texture. You can have the most unique experience at Tiko’s Floating Restaurant. It is a converted ship docked at the harbor, and you will have the best mud crabs and grilled lobster here. You will love sitting on the veranda here and enjoying the sunset with a high tea or sunset cocktail. Food Intensity Guide: A Note For Travelers On A Suva Food Tour Fijian hot is not the same as Western hot. So, if you are in Fiji and a local tells you that the curry is medium spicy, you must know that it’s hot.  If you are not a local, your brows are going to sweat. The small Fijian chilies or the Bongo chilies are powerful. So, it is always safe to ask for a mild spice level. Furthermore, indigenous Fijian food relies heavily on root vegetables such as Cassava and Dalo, or Taro. These veggies are starchy, and the gravies made with them are dense. So, be mindful of the quantity of these dishes while eating. Practical Tips To Follow On A Suva Food Tour Hygiene: Stick to busy stalls where the turnover is high.  Water: Stick to bottled water or "Fiji Water" (which is actually cheaper here!).  Cash is King: While hotels take cards, the market vendors and roti shops are strictly cash-only (Fijian Dollars).  What Are The Best Expert Tips For Your Suva Food Tour?  A food tour is not just about what to have. You must understand the flavor, texture, and richness of the dish you are having. Furthermore, you have to be aware of the right time to have them. The local market stalls and street vendors do not accept cards. So, you have to carry $5 and $10 FJD bills. You will notice a heavy crowd at the curry houses between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM. So, if you want a seat, you must visit between 11 AM and 2 PM. You will have the tropical fruits or the roti parcels in your hands. So, you will need to wash your hands before and after eating. So, carry wet wipes and avoid public sinks. Don’t eat the fruits collected from the market without washing them. However, pineapples and bananas are safe. Is the tap water looking yellowish? There is rust in your water. So, it’s best to choose an Island Chill or Fiji water.  Fijian curry has meat with bones. So, be careful while chewing. The vegetarian and non-vegetarian division is followed strictly in Fiji. So, if you want to have pure veg food, you must look for the same sign. Tipping is not mandatory in Suva, Fiji. But you must leave a small change ($2-$5). It is a kind gesture in small eateries.  The Fiji dishes with Lolo or coconut milk are heavy and rich. So, you must not plan any heavy outdoor activity, such as hiking, after having these gravies. Tap water is usually safe in Suva because it is chlorinated. However, if you are a tourist and have a sensitive stomach, you may fall sick.Also, sometimes, the tapwaters (especially in old buildings) have a yellowish color. This color comes from the rust, and you must not have it.Choose bottled water. 5. Are There Vegan Options In Suva? Yes! The Indian influence means Dhal (lentils) and vegetable curries are everywhere. Furthermore, the people here are very particular about the veg and non-veg contamination.So, you must look for the label Pure Vegetarian before having food at an eatery. 6. What Time Do Restaurants Close? The lunch spots in Suva close by 3 PM, and the dinner places close around 9:30 PM.The best time to have lunch is around 2 PM.Have dinner between 8:30 PM and 9 PM. 7. You think of the nature resorts, the famous wine tours, hiking, and birdwatching when we talk about exploring Tucumán. However, Tucumán has recently also emerged as an astrotourism hotspot.  The Ampimpa Astronomical Observatory in the Calchaquí Valleys of Tucumán is at the epicenter of this happening astrotourism scenario.  Now, this is an added feather to the crown of Tucumán, the smallest province of Argentina. It offers a vertical journey from the jungle to the desert in 50 kms.  Also, the nickname of Tucumán is not just a fancy phrase. It means a biological reality and refers to the historical event of Argentina’s independence from Spain in 1816.  Furthermore, El Jardín de la República, or the Garden of the Republic moniker, goes well with its subtropical climate and the lush landscape.   You guessed it right, as today, this Tucumán nature guide will take you to the Yungas Rainforest and the highlands of the Andes. The Yungas Rainforest (The Green Belt) The Yungas Rainforest is known as the Green Belt, as it is an ecodiverse region. Home to a diverse flora and fauna, the Yungas Rainforest hosts a variety of bromeliads, orchids, and ferns.  Furthermore, among the animals here, you will find tapirs, wild cats, and panthers. You can enjoy an easy 30-minute jungle walk through the Cascada del Río Noque trail. If you are seeking silence while hiking in San Javier, Tucumán, you can opt for the Sendero Anta Yacu trek.  It is around 25 km west of Tucumán. If you are a budget traveler like me, you can take the Bus No 340 to reach the park.  2. The Incan Highway remains, and the “Ciudacita” ruins are part of the UNESCO World Sites.  The Campo de los Aliso near Alpachiri is the main Aconquija National Park entrance. Furthermore, Cochuna is the wilder southern entrance of the Aconquija National Park.  Furthermore, the Mythical Trek of La Ciudacita, the Inca Ruins at 4400 meters, is the main highlight of this national park.   The High Andes & Puna (Tafí del Valle & Beyond) The harsh, cold conditions and a rich wildlife with the presence of vicuñas, flamingos are the highlighting features of the High Andes and Puna, at an altitude of 3000 meters.  This region has critical water resources that support livelihoods such as alpaca and llama. Let’s find out about the major nature reserves of this region.  1. Quebrada De Los Sosa Nature Reserve Take a drive up through Route 307 to find the Quebrada De Los Sosa Nature Reserve, where the jungle meets the clouds.  It is a 30 km-long gorge carved by the Los Sosa River, and it is home to more than 100 bird species.  With a winding pathway, it is also home to the Tafí del Valle. 2. Los Núñorcos & Reserva La Angostura Los Núñorcos, or the Cerro Núñorco mountain and Parque provincial Los Ñuñorcos are the prominent locations for hiking in Tucuman, Argentina.  As you explore the challenging trails here, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the Dique la Angostura lake and the Tafí del Valle. Tafí del Valle also has the Bald Mountain, or the Cerro El Pelao. You can start the trek near the Tafí del Valle center. It is a 1.5-hour-long trek.    Wildlife Watching Calendar In Tucuman, Argentina  Tucuman in Argentina is ideal for wildlife sightings throughout the year. However, do you know that you have to register at the ranger station at least 48 hours in advance? It is crucial for the safety of the hikers. For more such insider knowledge, these expert tips will be very handy. 1. Bus #118 Is Your Friend  You don’t have to hire a car to see the jungle and the nature reserves. You can take the 118 bus from San Miguel de Tucumán directly to the foot of the San Javier trails.  The ticket price is even less than $1.  2. Watch The Fog (Neblina) The Fin del Mundo" statue area on route 307 is often the zero-visibility zone. There is dense fog in this area even at around 4 PM. Along with the cultural richness of Tucumán, what hooked me was the community bonding and development. For the longest time, grape growing has been a part of local life. Now, in 2016, the Bodega Los Amaichas built the Amaicha del Valle community to take the local tradition and use it for the benefit of local people. It is the first indigenous community-owned winery in South America. Furthermore, Mendoza may get all the spotlight as the home of world-class Malbecs. But for travelers like me, who want a more rugged and authentic experience, Tucuman is the ultimate destination in Northern Argentina. Also, the wine tour in Tucuman is almost like a time capsule. The viticulture here is defined by family legacies, indigenous roots, and vineyards that touch the clouds.  In this Tucumán wine tour guide, I will talk about why Tucumán is an alternative to Mendoza, the route, the top wineries, and the specialty of local wines. Why Is Tucumán The "Untouched" Alternative To Mendoza?  The flat plains of Mendoza are ideal for massive production. However, the vineyards of Tucumán are in the narrow folds of the Calchaquí Valley. So, the experience in Tucumán is more like a boutique. Furthermore, there are very few crowds in Tucumán, and the terroir is not just about the soil. Here, people celebrate a 10,000-year-old connection to the land. As Visit Argentina says, “The dry climate, the wide temperature range, the gentle winds, and sunshine 350 days a year create the characteristics of Tucumán wine: intense colors, simple and spicy aromas, and ripe, sweet, and fruity flavors.”  The Concept: "Vinos De Altura"  Wine is a high-altitude sport in Tucumán. Grapes are grown under extreme conditions at an altitude of 2000 to 3000 meters. Also, the struggle is here with intense UV radiation and a dramatic jump in temperature between sun-scorched days and freezing nights. As a result, the grapes here have thicker skins to protect themselves. The thicker skin further leads to intense tannins and deeper colors. In addition, the aromatic profile here is more concentrated than in the lowlands. The Route: From Jungle To Vineyards (Route 307)  The drive to the wine country of Tucumán is one of the most spectacular road trips in South America. The journey from San Miguel to Amaicha del Valle starts in the subtropical and humid rainforest of the Yungas. Then, you will climb Route 307 to witness a radical transformation of the landscape. Your eyes will settle down with the lush ferns and moss-covered trees of the Quebrada de Los Sosa. Wait for 2 hours, and the Calchaquí Valley will appear with an arid landscape and cactus. Then, you will cross the Abra del Infiernillo at an elevation of 3000 meters before you descend to the Amaicha del Valle wineries. What Are The Top Wineries To Visit In Tucumán?  The top wineries of Tucumán offer a diverse experience. While Bodega Comunitaria Los Amaichas offers an authentic local experience, Finca Albarossa is more about a boutique feel. 1. The Indigenous Icon: Bodega Comunitaria Los Amaichas  This is the only winery in Argentina and one of the few in the world that is owned and operated by an indigenous community.  This winery has a cactus wood and stone architecture. The Amaicha del Valle community governs it, and every custom here respects the Mother Earth or Pachamama. I have seen people offering wine to Mother Earth before drinking. The high-altitude malbec, standing on the opposite spectrum of the flavor profile, comes with a spicy and structured flavor. This wine comes from the grapes with Soun-toughened skins. So, these have a signature dark purple hue. 3. Vino Patero  Vino Patero is an experience. It has an intense, sweet, and fruity flavor. This boutique wine was made traditionally by pressing the grapes by foot. The “Patero” part in Vino Patero comes from " pata " or foot. This wine is artisanal, and it is unfiltered. Vino Patero is a frequently served beverage at the local festivals, and you will have it along with empanadas. Expert Tips On The Best Tucumán Wine Tour Guide  The Sacred City of Quilmes is just 15 minutes away from the wineries. Also, the early mornings are the ideal time to explore the ruins. So, the UV index is high, and within 10-15 minutes, you can get sunburned. So, wear a hat and sunscreen if you are doing the wine tasting outdoors. 7. For me, the Jaffna food tour was like walking into the locals' way of life. If the Jaffna temples show how the city is sincere about its culture, the food, and the art of having it, they show how rooted the entire Tamil community in Jaffna is.  How they mix the rice and curry with their right hands and consume the food is an art you will love, and it is the way to truly appreciate the flavor profile.  Furthermore, Jaffna has maintained its spicy soul in food despite years of colonization by European forces and civil wars. The Tamil cuisine here is not similar to the coconut-milk-rich curries you find in South India. Also, they use roasted spice powder instead of raw ones.  From the first bite, my taste buds knew it, and the no-frills service at restaurants made me feel comfortable and concentrate only on the steaming hot food.  So, do you want to try these authentic Jaffna dishes and experience how this Northern Sri Lankan city preserves an authentic Tamil culture? It remains open from 7:30 AM to 9 PM, and on Saturdays, it opens at 8:30 AM.  They served me food on banana leaves and in steel utensils. Also, remember that they only accept cash. You must make a visit to the Malayan Cafe a part of your Jaffna travel itinerary.  2. The Red Rice Puttu Experience I tried the red rice puttu at a small local eatery. These eateries are called Saapadu Kades in the local language. I was blown away by the earthy and subtly sweet taste of the puttu.  The spicy chickpea curry perfectly complemented it. I also tried some Babat (Tripe) curry and fish kool.  The Lunch Stops And Specials  The food of Jaffna and Northern Sri Lanka has become so popular that Peter Kuruvita now conducts a food tour of the region. A tour of the Jaffna Market and attending the local cultural dance here is a prominent part of his food tour itinerary.  However, this tour offered by the Australian Chef is expensive, and you will have to spend between AUD 1885 and 6720 to be a part of the tour.  As a budget traveler, you can see much more and experience the food scene here better by walking around the city and talking to the locals.  There is so much authenticity in these DIY tours. Also, one great thing about the lunch staples in Jaffna is the variety. While the crab curry gets all the glory, there is something very comforting about the Sattvik food served here, including rice, different types of curries, and dal.  Let’s find out what to eat and where to eat.  1. Jaffna Crab Curry Jaffna crab curry is just the way I want to have the crab. It needs to be spicy and hot without adulterating the authentic taste of a crab. I had the crab curry at Cosy Hotel & Restaurant on Stanley Road.  However, let me tell you that Cosy Hotel is expensive, and I did not mind because we were a group of 5, travelers bonded over food, and our local guide. If you are traveling solo, the pocket-pinch will be around USD 20.  You can even try the crab curry at the small eateries in the streets of Jaffna. They don’t “look” impressive, and you may raise eyebrows about the hygiene. Still, they serve piping hot food, and the locals have it. So, they are safe. 2. Vegetarian Thali On A Banana Leaf At Nallur Bhavan During my temple visit in Jaffna, I found the Nallur Bhavan very close to the Nallur Kovil. They serve Sattvik food on banana leaves and in steel plates.  Most people were having Dosa here. However, I had some Chilli Kothu Parotta, and it was yum.  For a more comforting and filling experience, you can try rice with rasam and different types of sabzi here. The restaurant opens from 7 AM to 10 PM, and you can contact them at +94-212225556.  Evening Snacks And Cool Downs In Jaffna  The evenings in Jaffna are suitable for ice creams and snacks like Vadai. So, tasting the ice cream here is like cherishing the 55-year-old heritage of a city.  So, what Rio offers is nostalgia and not a gourmet experience.  Don't go to Rio Ice Cream expecting Italian Gelato. Vegan Food Options In Jaffna  Some authentic vegetarian dishes in Jaffna are also vegan. So, if you are a vegan and you want to try the authentic local food, Jaffna will be your paradise.  You can have steamed rice and curry made with long beans, drumsticks, spinach, and dhai. These coconut-milk-based curries are simple and flavorful.  Dosa and Idli are, of course, the Tamil staple any vegan can eat. These are made using rice and lentils. Ponggal, a savory rice dish, and pumpkin and tapioca dishes are the other variations you can try in Jaffna. Can I Dive Raja Ampat In August? Yes, you can dive in Raja Ampat in August. What Is The Water Temperature Like Year-round In Raja Ampat? The year-round water temperature in Raja Ampat is around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius. One of the best things about diving in Raja Ampat is the incredibly stable, bathtub-warm water. Because the archipelago is located just one degree from the equator, you won't experience the dramatic temperature drops or "thermoclines" found in other parts of Indonesia, like Komodo or Bali.  6. Do I Need A Dry Suit Or A Thick Wetsuit In The Off-season? No, you don’t need a dry suit or thick wetsuit to dive in Raja Ampat, even in the off-season. It is because the temperature of the waters here hovers around 28 to 30 degrees Celsius throughout the year. A 3mm thick wetsuit is enough if you are doing deep diving. It ensures that your body does not lose temperature rapidly. It also protects you from the irritants in the water and helps in buoyancy. 7. Does Visibility Change With The Seasons In Raja Ampat? Yes, visibility changes with the seasons in Raja Ampat. However, remember that having clear water does not mean the ideal condition for spotting the marine life in Raja Ampat. In the dry season, from October to April, the visibility is around 15 to 30 meters. Still, from December to March, nutrient-rich currents flood the archipelago. This creates "green" or "particulate" water. While this might frustrate wide-angle photographers looking for a pure blue background, it is the "dinner bell" for Manta Rays and Whale Sharks.Furthermore, during the wet season, from May to September, the visibility is 10 to 20 meters. However, this is an ideal time for many photographers as the water is clearer due to the lack of plankton blooms. 8. When Do The Liveaboards Move To Komodo? The famous Indonesian Switch, or the transition of liveaboards to and from Komodo, happens twice a year. In April and May, the peak diving season in Raja Ampat approaches its end. So, 80% of the liveaboards in Raja Ampat move toward the Komodo National Park. These liveaboards often pass through the Banda Sea and the Forgotten Island, where you can spot hammerhead sharks in late April and May. Again, these liveaboards return in September and October as Komodo starts getting heavy rainfall, but the water of Raja Ampat becomes still. On the way, you can spot deep-sea pinnacles and incredible whale shark encounters in Triton Bay or the Banda Sea.  9. Is It Safe To Visit Raja Ampat During The Monsoon? Yes, the rainy season does not mean a complete shutdown for tourists to Raja Ampat. Have you ever been to a place where the clarity of the water feels like liquid air? Yes, you have heard it right. I am talking about the waters of Raja Ampat in Indonesia. Also, the dense coral reefs here look like a kaleidoscope in motion.   Its strategic location in the Coral Triangle in West Papua has also blessed it with a diverse marine life. Did you know that Raja Ampat has “75% of the known coral species” and more than 1,320 species of reef fish (Source: UNESCO)?   No wonder it is called the Amazon of the Seas. Also, with UNESCO designating it as a Biosphere Reserve on 27th September, 2025, it is now one of the just two places on the earth to have the distinction of being a UNESCO Global Geopark and Biosphere Reserve at the same time.   So, consisting of four islands (Raja Ampat means Four Islands), Waigeo, Salawati, Batanta, and Misool, Raja Ampat is like the biological "bullseye” as the most diverse marine habitat on the planet.   Hi, in this Raja Ampat marine life guide, I will be talking about what marine species to see in Raja Ampat Indonesia.   Also, if you want to make the most of the underwater wonderland of Raja Ampat, check out our Raja Ampat diving trips.   With an unbelievable marine life and rock formations that go back to 400 million years, Raja Ampat is the “living laboratory” of marine conservation according to UNESCO.   So, when the water here has more than a thousand species to spot, let’s find out the Big 5 of the water here. These creatures are unique, and they are majestic. They also represent the mystery of water.   1. Manta Rays (Oceanic Manta And Reef Manta)  Raja Ampat is one of the rarest places in the world to have oceanic and reef Manta Rays. You can even spot them at the same time at the same cleaning station.   Oceanic Manta Vs Reef Manta   Reef Mantas, with even a massive 5-meter wingspan, are smaller than the Ocean Mantas. The wingspan of the Ocean Mantas is close to 7 meters.   Furthermore, Reef Mantas stay in large, social groups, while the Oceanic Mantas are pelagic wanderers.   Also, Oceanic Mantas feature a “T” shape on their shoulders. On the other hand, you can identify Reef Mantas from the “Y” or “V” shapes on their back.  What Are The Best Sites For Spotting Manta Rays In Raja Ampat?  Manta Sandy in the Dampier Strait and Magic Mountain in Misool are the best places for spotting Manta Rays.  In the Dampier Strait is a quintessential cleaning station for Reef Mantas. The site is shallow, and you will find the Reef Mantas moving over the "bommes" with cleaner wrasse doing their work.  Furthermore, Magic Mountain is the place where you will find both species. So, it looks like a Manta Ballet against the backdrop of the dark blue water. 2. Walking Shark Raja Ampat (Epaulette Shark) And Where To Find Them The Walking Shark, or the Epaulette Shark, is the mascot of Raja Ampat. These are called walking sharks because they can use their pectoral and pelvic fins like legs. So, they do not swim and “walk” across the sea floor.  These are nocturnal hunters, strictly. If you are going night snorkeling at Sawinggrai or Arborek, you will spot them walking past your mask. It’s a surreal experience, I must say! 3. Wobbegong Sharks The Wobbegong Sharks usually rest on the seabed. They also remain tucked under a coral ledge.  Wobbegong Shark Sightings: Spotting The Masters Of Camouflage  These sharks are also known as “Carpet Sharks.” They have mottled and ornate patterns. So, they can disguise themselves well. You will also spot a beard of fleshy tassels around their mouths.  You will often mistake these predators for a piece of weed-covered reef. Sardine Reef in the Dampier Strait and various areas around Misool to find the Wobbegong Sharks.  4. Pygmy Seahorses Pygmy Seahorses in Raja Ampat come in various species, such as Bargibant’s, Denise’s, and Pontoh.  Bargibant’s is the most popular, and they have pinkish nodules, which match the color of their host coral. Bargibant also hides in the Gorgonian fans. They never leave their specific host fan, spending their entire lives blending into its polyps. Denise’s pygmies are slender, and the whitish Pontoh pygmies are found on hydroids and algae.  Pygmy Seahorse Habitats In Raja Ampat  You will love exploring the top Raja Ampat dive sites in search of the Pygmy Seahorses. Dampier Strait, especially sites such as Cape Kri, Blue Magic, and Misool, are the best sites to spot these adorable marine creatures.  5. Cetaceans (Whales And Dolphins) The archipelago has deep-water trenches and powerful currents. So, the water is an important highway for marine animals.  Spotting The Whales And Dolphins The Dampier Strait is a primary migration corridor. So, you will frequently spot Spinner and Bottlenose Dolphins near your diveaboards in Raja Ampat.  Furthermore, you will find Pilot Whales, Sperm Whales, or Orcas in the deep channels between the islands.  Rare & Macro Critters: A Photographer’s Dream Raja Ampat coral diversity and the macro critters make it a favorite of photographers. You will come across diverse, bizarre animals in the reef.  1. Nudibranchs And Flatworms: The Living Jewels Underwater Nudibranchs or sea slugs are vibrant, and they shine like jewels in the deep blue water of Raja Ampat, thanks to their neon shades.  You will find various species of nudibranchs and flatworms in the waters of Raja Ampat. Chromodoris is the most common species, and they look unreal. They feel like they're straight from the pages of sci-fi movies.  You will find them in Misool areas such as Nudi Rock and Lalosi in the Dampier Strait.  2. Blue Ringed Octopus And Cuttlefish The tiny and lethal marine wonders, blue-ringed octopuses, come with a brown body. They pulse with glowing blue rings when they feel threatened.  Another marine wonder is the Broadclub Cuttlefish. They use their skin as a television screen. Do “Cheap” and “Free” ring similarly to you? Not to me, at least! I was researching free activities for my visit to Kotor, Montenegro. Every guide, trust me, every guide, was a random mix of cheap and free activities. And it’s almost 2026, the same problem lies with the so-called guides of Kotor Montenegro free activities. Everyone is actually discussing the cheap activities, or they are not giving the true picture and updates about free activities like the Kotor Fort through the Ladder of Kotor route. Did anyone tell you that the “Window” section for a free jump into the fort premises no longer exists? It has been blocked, and there is a turnstile at the entry point. You can still go for a free hike on that route, but it will no longer be a trek to the fort. So, if you are expecting a free sneak into the Kotor Fort, I would say, “Don't hike for 2 hours expecting to sneak in.” However, if you want to enjoy a free view of the Kotor Bay or the fort from outside the walls, I will say, “Go ahead!” Also, the bus rides in Kotor are never “Free!” They are cheap, yes, costing around 1 to 3 Euros for local transfers. However, one delightful thing that is absolutely free in Kotor is the cat therapy. I had the most adorable time with the cats of Kotor. These adorable animals are indeed the guardians of the city. In this Tour and Travel Blog, I will talk about the Kotor Montenegro free activities in detail. I will also touch upon the cheap activities to do in Kotor, Montenegro, and budget travel hacks. What Are The Kotor Montenegro Free Activities? Kotor is so walkable and welcoming that you can have fun outdoors and explore the historical and cultural landmarks of the city free of cost. 1. Hiking The Free And Big Walls Of The City  The history of Kotor speaks through the Kotor Fortress. Furthermore, the abandoned Austro-Hungarian Fort, built in the 19th century, stands out today with its mysterious monk paintings. You can include a hike to these big city walls as a free activity in your Kotor, Montenegro travel itinerary.  Hiking The Kotor Fort For Free  You can visit the Kotor Fort via the city entrance, which costs 15 Euros. However, you can avoid this cost by taking the alternative route, which begins behind the Old Town of Kotor. You can access this trekking route via Tabačina Street. This route, beginning near the River Gate exit, is popular among locals for a free hike to the Kotor Fortress or the San Giovanni Fortress. After walking for 20 to 30 minutes on the route with loose rocks and steepness, there is a place called “Window.” Earlier, locals and tourists used to get into the fortress through this window. However, the window is now blocked with strict vigilance from the fort authority. So, you cannot reach the fort through this hiking route anymore. But hiking through this route itself is an experience. Also, if you are looking for cheap eats in Kotor, Montenegro, that offer the most authentic experience, let me tell you that you will find the best cured ham here. The hiking route leads to Njegusi, and it has some amazing family-run taverns. Hiking The Fort Vrmac For Free  I did not know that so close to Kotor, Montenegro, I would find the ruins of an Austro-Hungarian Fort. The hiking route is easy, and it passes through a quiet forest, offering multiple vantage points and amazing views. The trailhead is just 15 minutes away from the Kotor Old Town and near the town of Muo. Also, the stone path of 6.5 kilometers can be completed within 3 to 4 hours. On my way, I came across pomegranate trees and spotted turtles with yellow and black spots. The only difficulty I faced on this route was the lack of any clear direction. The route was a bit random and can get confusing if you are hiking alone. After I reached the top, I found an abandoned military outpost. It was like a ghost town. The ghost town and the Vrmac Fort of 1894, which suddenly emerged before my eyes like something surreal, seemed eerie to me. I could hear the rifles firing. The fort played a vital role in the World Wars and was later used by the Yugoslav army.  Expanding The Free Hike To Fort Vrmac  Once you are done exploring the fort, you will find many trails leading to different destinations from the top of the hill. You can choose to continue your hike to Tivac or take an alternative and longer trek route to Kotor Town. Hiking The Fort Gorazda For Free  Fort Gorazda is another Austro-Hungarian Fort, and it is a popular free hiking destination near the Old Town of Kotor. This fort, built between 1884 and 1886, is located at an altitude of 452 meters. Once you reach the hilltop, you must climb up the metal dome. This armored metal dome was one of the main elements, offering a strategic advantage to the fort. From the top of this dome, you will get a 360-degree view of Herceg Novi, Lustica Peninsula, and Tivat. For a free hike, you must start at the Trg od Oruzja or the Main Square of Kotor. Then, walk to the Old Town and make an exit at the Vrata od Kampa or North Gate. Turn left and continue on the Jadranska magistrala or coastal road to find the signs for Skaljari. Chill at the cafes and shops along the way and have some refreshment. Then, walk for around 20 minutes to reach the Skaljari Village. Walk straight and on the right, you will find a steep path that takes you uphill. At the end of this road, you will find Fort Gorazda. The hike is moderately challenging, and a round trip will take around 5-7 hours. An Alternative Route To Fort Gorazda  If you are short on time and don’t want to walk so much, I want to share some Kotor transport tips to reach Skaljari.   The bus ride will take around 10 minutes, and once you reach Skaljari, you can walk for 15 to 20 minutes to the route leading to the fort atop a hill.   This combination of bus ride and hike is also a budget-friendly option, considering the bus tickets only cost around 1 to 2 Euros.   2. Free Historical And Cultural Exploration  When you have the alleys of a UNESCO World Heritage Site to be explored, you know that a rich cultural and historical experience awaits you.   It’s time to soak in the medieval atmosphere.   Walking The Old Town (Stari Grad): A Self-Guided Route  The Old Town or Stari Grad of Kotor allows you to get lost intentionally in the cobblestone mazes and alleys.   • Walk Starts At Gurdić Gate  Anyway, I started from the Gurdić Gate, or the southern entrance to Kotor. From there, my walk continued through Craftsmen Street.   I met and talked with the carpenters, goldsmiths, blacksmiths, and shoemakers there. I bought two model boats from a shop here as souvenirs.   • The Famous River Gate And Meeting The Cats Of The Town  Then, I reached the famous River Gate. I crossed the bridge there and got an amazing view of San Giovanni’s Fortress.   Then, I came back to the town, and near the Leafy Square, I found many cats, the guardians of the city. Also, St Mary’s Church, built in 1221, was one of the main attractions during my Strai Grad walk.   • St Lucas’ Square  My next stop was St Lucas’ Square, home to the Orthodox Church of St Nicholas. However, I found St Lucas’ Church here more interesting, with the history of this Byzantine church going back to 1195.   The St Lucas’ music school was opposite the church, and I could hear the sound of the piano and the full orchestra.   • Museum Square   I took the little lane to the Museum Square, and just before reaching the square, I found Karampana in a small courtyard on my right. It is the oldest public well in Kotor.   On the left, there is the Gregorina Palace, home to the famous Maritime Museum of Kotor. • St Tryphon’s Square   With beautiful mountain views and guarded by ramparts, St Tryphon’s Square is a place filled with many iconic landmarks of the Old Town. In a clockwise direction, you will find the following places at St Tryphon’s Square.   ⁍ The Old Town Hall  ⁍ Drago Palace  ⁍ Bishop’s Palace  ⁍ St Tryphon’s Cathedral  Venetian traders brought some of the relics inside St Tryphon’s Cathedral from Constantinople to Kotor in 809. There is also an altarpiece made by the goldsmiths of Kotor in the 15th century.   • Square Of Four   I took the road running between the Old Town Hall and the restaurant and reached the Square of Four.   Pima Palace and the Buča Palace are two important architectural and historical landmarks of the Square of Four.   • Square Of Arms   After I reached the Square of Arms, I visited Café Forza. I had an amazing Dobrotska Torta and coffee here, while cherishing the view of the Bizanti Palace, Venetian Arsenal, the Prince’s Palace, and more.   Finally, I bid goodbye to the Old City and made an exit through the Sea Gate. Which Churches Are Actually Free?  Kotor, Montenegro, has many churches, and they are often mentioned while discussing the Kotor Montenegro free activities.   However, not all the churches in Kotor offer a free entry. For example, you will need to pay 3 Euros for an entry to the St. Tryphon Cathedral Church.   • St. Nicholas Church   The St. Nicholas Church in Kotor is one of the free churches to visit in Montenegro. This orthodox church, built in 1909, has a lavish interior. You can buy candles from the small shops nearby for praying at the church.  • St. Tryphon Cathedral  St. Tryphon Cathedral, or Kotor Cathedral, built in 1166, does not offer free entry. You have to pay 3 Euros for the entry.   The church has the relics of St. Tryphon, the patron saint of the city, and a museum. Its architectural style shows eclectic influences, including the Baroque, Renaissance, Byzantine, and Roman styles.  • St. Luke Church, Kotor   The best thing about this 1195 church is that it does not have a clear Catholic or Orthodox identity. So, it was my favorite in Kotor. Anything that does not create differences for religion!  Furthermore, the church has one Catholic altar and an Orthodox altar. It remains open to all and offers a free entry during the summer season. However, it remains closed in the winter season.   • St. Claire’s Church, Kotor  Adjacent to the Franciscan Monastery, St. Claire Church, built in the 18th century, stands out with its grand altar and stunning interior.   Have a look at its wooden ceiling before leaving the church. It offers a free entry.   The Hidden Gem: St. Clare’s Franciscan Monastery, Church & Library  Once again, let’s talk about the St. Claire’s Church, Monastery, and Library, one of the few Catholic churches in Kotor, Montenegro, and a true hidden gem.   Made of brick and stone, the exterior of the church is humble. However, once you enter the church, the main altar, made of red and white marbles and exuding a Baroque style, will immediately steal your attention.   This altar was made by Francesco Cabianca in 1708. The side altars also have a Baroque style with paintings by Venetian artists. Later, Špiro Đuranović, a local painter, added a picture of St. Clare and four evangelists.   Among the many other collectibles, ancient books and manuscripts preserved by the church and its library, the Ecce Homo painting by the Spanish painter Morales, or El Divino, is the most famous.   Walking The Lower City Walls & Kampana Tower  You can start this walk of the Kampana Tower and the lower city walls from the Sea Gate.   Enter the Old Town.  Walk toward the northwest corner of the city walls to find the Kampana Tower.  Enjoy the views of the Scurda River and the harbor.  Walk toward the North Gate.  3. Nevertheless, with the Blue Line Bus and various car and bike rental services across the city, Kotor has a well-managed public and private transportation system. Here are the details. 1. Walking The Old Town (Stari Grad)  Walking along the pedestrian-only historic squares and medieval cobblestone streets is the best way to experience Kotor. This is an experience everyone loves! Be it an introvert who just wants to be by themselves and introspect, or the young and curious minds who want to explore new places and people! After exploring the Old Town, you can also take a walk or cycle along the flat promenades, taking you to the waterfront. Walk or cycle and stop by to interact with the cats, the guardians of the city, or have the best meal at a quaint coffee shop. Life is beautiful in Kotor when you walk and discover. 2. Using The Blue Line Bus System  When traveling to Kotor on a budget, the smartest method is to buy the Blue Line Hop-on Hop-off tourist bus service. The pass will cost around 25 Euros for a day, and it departs from the Central Bus Station of Kotor. The bus route is like Kotor, Risan, Perast, Bajova Kula, and Kotor. However, you can also take the regular intercity buses to Podgorica, Budva, Belgrade, and Herceg Novi. You can check the bus timings and fare on https://www.checkmybus.com/. Also, you can travel to areas such as Dobrota, Tivat, and Muo within 20 to 30 minutes and for a ticket price of 1 to 3 Euros. 3. Taxis And Private Transfers In Kotor  Taxis and private transfers are easily available in Kotor, and most vehicles operate with a metered fare or a standard tariff rate. Red Taxi Kotor and GarGo Taxi Kotor are some trusted taxi services in the city. You will easily find the taxis from the Lower Station of the spectacular Kotor-Lovćen Cable Car or the DUB Station. The charges will be around $45-$60 a day, or based on the destination, it can vary from $15-45. 4. Kotor Water Taxis: Tours Vs. Commute  Kotor water taxis are not public transport services. Also, if you are a budget traveler, you can take a walk to the Tivat Bus Station and then take a Blue Line bus from there. 2. From Podgorica Airport  The Podgorica Airport is located at a distance of 79 km from Kotor. The travel time is close to 2 hours. If budget is not a constraint and you want to experience the highest comfort, you can take a taxi from Podgorica Airport’s Arrival Hall. The metered taxi fare from Pogrocia Airport will be around 85 Euros. There is no direct bus service from Podgorica. You will have to reach the Podgorica Central Bus Station at Golootočkih žrtava Square, and from there, you will get a bus to Kotor. There is also a storage service near the bus station where you can keep your luggage for 1 Euro. The first bus for Kotor from Podgorica Bus Station starts at 12:30 AM and the last one for the day departs at 10:25 PM. The bus ticket price will be between 7 and 9.5 Euros. 3. Dubrovnik In Croatia  There are four ways to travel from the Dubrovnik Airport in Croatia to Kotor, Montenegro. Bus from Dubrovnik Central Station to Kotor  Private Transfer  Ferry Ride  Car Rental  However, for a budget traveler, the bus ride is a more suitable option. You can take the airport shuttle or the Platanus service to reach the Central Bus Station, from where buses to Kotor are available. You can check the options on flixbus.com. One bus starts at 11 AM from Dubrovnik Central Bus Station and reaches Kotor at 1:10 PM. The next bus departs at 5:30 PM and reaches Kotor at 7:30 PM. The ticket price is 32 Euros. However, keep 1 hour or so as a buffer as passport checking at the border of Debeli Brijeg can take up to one hour. Expert Kotor Montenegro Transportation Tips: The Secret Hacks You Must Know  This is where I will talk about how to travel like a local around Kotor. Follow these hacks to avoid missing a Blue Line Bus, get rid of the parking worry, and make the overall transportation experience easier. 1. The "Yellow Paint" Bus Stop Rule  Are you looking for signs or vertical poles to catch a “Blue Line” bus from a stop? You will inevitably miss the bus. Kotor is different from other European cities in this matter. To keep the visual appeal of the city intact, Kotor has the word "BUS" painted on the asphalt. It is the only indication that the bus will stop here. You will have to stand at the mark and wave your hands so that the bus stops to pick you up. 2. Use The Lepetane-Kamenari Pedestrian Loophole  You can save 40 kms of driving if you are crossing the narrow strait at Verige. Furthermore, when crossing the bay, the crossing charge for a car will be $5. However, if you are crossing as a pedestrian, there will be no charge. You can contact Red Taxi at +382 67 319 714. Also, you can install the Viber app on your phone. If you are travelling in the Red Taxi or a Viber Cab, you will have to pay around $15-$40, based on the distance you are traveling. 4. Know About The "Kamelija" Parking Validation  Parking anywhere in and near the Old Town of Kotor is tricky and expensive. So, if you are traveling in a private or rented car/bike, you will need a parking hack to save money. You can park your car at the Kamelija Shopping Centre parking lot. If you are shopping for $5 or more, you will get free parking. Keep the receipts handy to show the proof. You will have to validate the receipt at the information desk before you make an exit. 5. Sunday Schedules For The Blue Line Buses Are Irregular Blue Line buses are the saviors when you are on a budget travel in Kotor. However, Sundays are not the best if you want to travel by bus. The frequency becomes less, and the buses running on hourly intervals can run every two to three hours. So, if you are traveling in Kotor on a Sunday evening, you need to look for an alternative, like a taxi or a bike. 6. Remember That There Is No Direct Bus To The Podgorica Airport  Many buses run between Podgorica and Kotor. However, only a local knows that the buses do not take you to the airport. You can go to the City Center or the Bus Station. From the bus station, you will have to take a taxi, which will cost around $15-16, and the journey will take around 45 minutes. 7. Be Extra Careful During The Tivat Airport "Highway Walk"  The Tivat Airport is the closest to Kotor. The nearby bus station is just 800 meters away. For a traveler in their twenties, walking this distance seems like a breeze. However, being a budget-friendly traveler does not mean that you have to compromise on your safety. Here, you will have to walk along the Adriatic Highway, and there is no designated sidewalk. So, walking along this way with luggage, especially in the evening, can be dangerous. It is okay to spend $5-$6 on the taxi ride from the Kotor Airport to the Kotor Bus Station.  8. Remember This Hack To Avoid The Hiked Fortress Wall Fee  You know, in 2026, Kotor is probably the most unexpected European travel destination to be on everyone’s bucket list. Also, recently, it has been getting a lot of attention from the young and budget travelers in the USA and the UK. It happened after the US News called it an underrated destination, and British Airways made an announcement about starting new flights to Tivat in 2026. Now, Kotor, a postcard-perfect fjord, will make your camera drop, and the “Ladder of Kotor” is one of the most interesting features of Kotor. This zigzag hiking route with 70 switchbacks takes us to Cetinje and Njegusi. This route, built by the Austrians, was an important trade and military route. It is just behind the Kotor Old Town and near the River Gate exit, which you can access via Tabačina Street. However, only locals know that it is the trusted alternative route to reach San Giovanni fortress. After the recent hike, the entry fee to the San Giovanni fortress is 15 Euros. So, now you know how to explore the fortress walls for free!  The route is moderately challenging with its steepness and loose rocks, and climbing up and down the route takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. After ascending for 20-30 minutes, you will find the famous “Window” through which you can get into the fortress. I know it’s not right, but many locals do it. Updates About The Ladder Of Kotor Route  The famous “Window,” the access point to the fortress from the Ladder of Kotor, has been blocked. The authorities were always against it, but this time, it has finally blocked. So, while the Latter of Kotor will not give you access to the fortress anymore, you can choose a free hike along the route for the best views of the Kotor Bay and the fortress. Also, on this route, I tasted the best cured ham at a family-run smokehouse. I had the ham with honey, cheese, and rakhija. 9. The Perast "Upper Road" Bus Trap Is A Nightmare  Following the “Bus” sign in yellow is a task when taking a Blue Line bus; the traffic on the Perast waterfront also makes it difficult to catch a bus. To avoid the traffic, the bus drivers often stick to the upper highway only and skip the waterfront. So, if you are standing by the waterfront and waiting for a bus that never arrives, you need to run up the stairs to the main highway stop. You will get the bus from there.  10. Luggage Storage Is Old School You will not get a digital locker for storing your luggage in Kotor. However, there is a cloakroom near the Kotor Bus Station. This garderobe or cloakroom service allows you to keep your bags at a charge of 2-3 Euros per bag. You will have to pay the charges in cash. However, in the peak season, the cloakroom can get full. Remember that it is not a public ferry service, and it would cost more, around 30 to 50 Euros. It is ideal for a touristy experience through a scenic route and to avoid the dense traffic on the road. However, taking a bus or a taxi service to Tivat Airport is the most budget-friendly way. Remember that the bus only goes till the Tivat Bus Station, and from there it is around an 800-meter walk to the airport. So, despite a cheap ticket price (around 2-5 Euros), it may not be the best choice.Take a private taxi instead and reach the Tivat Airport from Kotor within 10 minutes at a cost of around 5 Euros.  10. How Do I Cross The Border From Dubrovnik To Kotor?  You have to cross the border of Debeli Brijeg or Karasovići to reach Kotor from Dubrovnik. You can take a bus from the Gruž bus station. However, you have to book it in advance as there is always a rush, and the journey takes around 3 hours. Tickets are available on platforms such as BusTicket4.me and from the Dubronik main station. Also, remember that Montenegro is not a Schengen country. So, there will be stringent passport checks at the border. As a result, the travel time will be around 4 hours or more during the peak season. FlixBus, Blue Line, and Croatia Bus run buses on this route, and the ticket price will be between $30-40 based on the distance you travel. You can even take a car rental or drive a car through E80/M2 to Debeli Brijeg and cross it to reach Kotor. We know it for the stunning views of the Kotor Bay and its unique medieval charm.  However, the food story of Kotor is not as fascinating as its Old Town Square, City Wall, and century-old stone houses. And the best thing is that the local flavors are delightful yet ideal for backpackers and budget travelers through the Balkans.  My days in Kotor, Montenegro, were about savoring hot pastries and local seafood delicacies. I could see meat getting grilled through the glass cover as I entered the space.  The interior has a unique setup, with the walls covered in images of a compass and scribbles. However, I preferred to sit in the backyard area, which was quiet and more aesthetic.  I was in a hurry. So, I tried some chicken and pork. You can even opt for the family platters with different sauces, pickled onions, cabbage, French fries, and bread.  I also loved the bottle of Cedevita in lime flavor. It was a much-needed dose to start the day.  What Are The Hidden Gems in Dobrota? Dobrota, home to the Clock Tower and Maritime Museum, is also famous for its food scene.
