While Iran, one of the oldest countries in the world, is fighting back against the joint attack of the USA and Israel, it’s the correct moment to look back at the ancient civilizations of our world.  So, what is the oldest country in the world?  While some say it is Japan, some vouch for India, and China remains the oldest continuous civilization in the world.  Here, I have picked 10 countries that I can call the “Immortal Ten” because of the human resilience they have shown and how they have survived.  What Is The Oldest Country In The World?  The current geopolitical map, in fact, did not exist for a long time.  Most of the countries that are members of the United Nations came into being in the aftermath of 20th-century decolonization or the dissolution of Soviet-era empires.  But what lies under the modern borders and changing flags is a much deeper level of human history.  Although historians generally use continuous sovereignty to measure longevity.  However, a government can lose its sovereignty to an invader, but that does not necessarily mean the end of the culture.  The true measures of a lasting civilization are cultural continuity, the survival of language,  religion, social cohesion, and identity beyond the ruin of even the most magnificent palaces. So, each civilization that qualifies for this list has withstood conquest, colonization, or internal upheaval without losing its very foundation.  Here are the ten oldest civilizations that are still living today. 1. China, The Oldest Continuous Civilization In The World  China traces its origins back to the Shang Dynasty (c. 1600 BC) over 3,500 years ago.  The oracle bone script of the Shang did not simply get lost like the hieroglyphics of Egypt or the cuneiforms of Mesopotamia. Instead, it gradually transformed into the modern Chinese writing system in use today.  Furthermore, the "Imperial Logic" of China, a centralized bureaucracy under moral guidance by Confucianism, was the charter of the Han Dynasty. It continued to be the underpinning even through the rise and fall of the many dynasties.  Even when the country was dominated by foreign powers such as the Mongols (Yuan Dynasty) or the Manchus (Qing Dynasty), they did not "unmake" China.  Rather, the new rulers were "Sinicized, " taking on the Chinese ways of administration and language so as to stay in power.  The present-day People's Republic of China utilizes a model of central governance that is reflective of the bureaucratic mindset of the emperors who ruled the country some two millennia ago. 2. Egypt: The Tital Of Antiquity  Egyptian civilization rose to prominence around 3100 BC under Pharaoh Narmer, at least in theory.  For 3,000 years, it set the standard for administration, engineering, and art.  The native religion faded with Christianity, and later Islam, and Coptic was mostly replaced by Arabic.  Still, the Egyptian character stayed rooted in the Nile.  Foreign powers, such as the Persians, Romans, Ottomans, and British, could never fully erase that identity.  Furthermore, Cairo held a central role in Islamic thought for centuries.  Today, Egypt remains the most culturally influential nation in the Arab world. The people have outlasted every empire that tried to control them. 3. Iran: The Persian Resilience  Iran, once called Persia, ruled the world from 550 BC when Cyrus the Great built the Achaemenid Empire.  The culture soaked up new rulers instead of losing itself.  After Alexander took over, he started wearing Persian royal clothes.  When Islam came in the 7th century through Arab rule, Persians embraced the faith but kept their language and built a unique style of art and religion. Thus, eventually, the formation of Shi'a Islam happened.  Farsi stayed strong with its roots unchanged and gave rise to poetry that shaped global thought, in particular through Rumi and Hafez.  Now, Iran's Islamic Republic stands where the ancient emperors once did, same land, same heartland, 2,500 years later! 4. India: The Land Of Spirituality India's story starts with the Indus Valley Civilization (c 2500 BC).  After it faded, the Vedic traditions in the Ganges Valley shaped Hinduism.  Also, the thing is, India has always had this "Diversity in Unity. "  It survived Mughal rule and the British Raj without giving up its core values or spiritual roots.  Local languages, epics like the Mahabharata, and daily life structures held strong through centuries of outside control.  After its independence from British Rule in 1947, India became the world's largest democracy, built on an ancient foundation that still holds together today. 5. Greece: The Land Of Philosophy  Greek civilization had its beginnings in the Bronze Age with the Mycenaeans (c. 1100 BC). Furthermore, its most flourishing period was the 5th-century BC "Golden Age" of Athens.  After the Greek city-states were absorbed by Rome to some extent, Greek culture became the very foundation of the Roman Empire.  In the Byzantine Empire, Greek was the language of the state as well as the church, and it was through these that Classical knowledge was preserved through the Middle Ages.  Even under four centuries of Ottoman rule, Greeks maintained their identity through the Orthodox Church and the use of their ancient language.  Moreover, when modern Greece was liberated in 1830, in essence, it was not a matter of creating a new identity. It was about celebrating a nation and a culture that has been around for three thousand years. 6. Japan: The Land Of The Oldest Continuous Hereditary Monarchy Japan has the world's oldest continuous hereditary monarchy, beginning with a legendary founding in 660 BC and first documented records in the 6th century AD.  It modernized rapidly during the Meiji Restoration in 1868 without losing its traditional values.  Furthermore, unified by one language and Shinto and Buddhism, Japan was never colonized by a Western power.  Even after World War II destroyed much of its infrastructure, the imperial institution stayed intact as a symbol of continuity.  Probably more or less, Japan's blend of advanced industry and old social norms contributes to its stability.  Today, the nation remains one of the most enduring civilizations in history. 7. Ethiopia: The Highland Fortress Ethiopia stands as a symbol of African endurance.  Its origins go back to the Aksumite Empire (c. 100 AD), which was among the earliest nations to adopt Christianity in the 4th century.  For over seven hundred years, the Solomonic Dynasty, which asserted its lineage from the biblical King Solomon, ruled the country.  The challenging terrain of Ethiopia enabled it to be the only African country that was never colonized (although it was under an Italian occupation for a short time in the 1930s).  The Ethiopian Orthodox Church and the Ge'ez script were cultural foundations. It preserved national identity and sovereignty when the rest of the continent was carved up by Europe. 8. Jewish Civilization Starting in the kingdoms of Israel and Judah more than 3,000 years ago, Jewish civilization stands as the most remarkable example of cultural resilience in history.  After the Romans destroyed Jerusalem, the Jews spread out worldwide in a diaspora. Normally, a nation without a territory would lose its identity in a few generations.  However, Jewish civilization, through religious law (Halakha), the Hebrew script, and a strong tradition of education, was able to survive as a "portable nation".  The founding of the State of Israel in 1948 was the political expression of a cultural memory that had been kept alive for over 2,000 years. 9. Armenia: The First Christian State Armenia has been located in the Caucasus region for at least 3,000 years.  It was the first country to make Christianity its official religion in 301 AD.  Yes, the Armenian people had many influences. The Persian, Roman, Ottoman, and Soviet!   They still maintained their unique alphabet (created in the 5th century) and their national church.  Not even the atrocities of the 1915 genocide were able to sever the cultural connection of the modern Republic of Armenia with its ancient Bronze Age heritage. 10. Korea: The Hermit Continuity The Korean culture started with the kingdom of Gojoseon. Further, its cultural identity resulted in a unified nation by the 7th century.  Surrounded by a peninsula, Korea had its unique Hangul script and Confucian values. Thus, despite cultural influences from China and a very harsh period of Japanese colonization (1910-1945), it never lost its identity.  Even though North and South are separate nowadays, they both have the same original myths, language, and sense of ancestors' pride.

Knowing where the state of Maine is can be viewed as knowing what it means to go “down east.”  By looking at a map, one would seem to be travelling in a northern/easterly direction.  However, this term has its origins steeped in maritime history. Sailors from Boston were navigating south of their port. Furthermore, they had to change their sails so that they could sail downwind on their way to Maine (also known as the Pine Tree State).  So this linguistic peculiarity now serves as an analogy to describe life along the rugged coastline of Maine and how that affects the way you live, work, and play every day. Bar Harbor, located about 155 miles northeast of Portland-Maine, is considered the “crown jewel” of Mount Desert Island.  With the option of taking highway I-95, the fastest route available from Portland, the travel is less than 3 hours to the entrance of Acadia National Park. However, I decided to take U.S. Route 1, one of the most scenic highways on the East Coast, due to its many curves, which require you to slow down and enjoy the essence of TheLowDownUnder Travel.  The scenery will reward your patience by providing a “pictorial texture” that cannot be found anywhere else in America. Here are the details.  A Time Travel In Portland’s Old Port I started my Portland Maine to Bar Harbor road trip by indulging in the largest food scene of the state.  Given the limited time in Portland (one night), I decided to spend it within the Old Port district.  When you arrive in Old Port, all of the cobblestones have been drenched in salt, which gives you the impression that you aren't going to be on vacation, but instead you have just completed a chapter in one of Herman Melville’s books. The architectural splendor of the 1800's is prominently displayed on the secure, weather-proofed, antique brick buildings and their well-worn piers. Here, tourists and local fishermen have become blurringly intermingled as one does, sharing docks and vessels of their respective types.  The Harbor is similarly blessed, with beautiful yachts docked near rusted fishing boats or lobster traps, all rocking together in unison as the water ebbs and flows with the tide. I made my way to Scales, a restaurant located in a restored warehouse that extends out onto the wharf.  Underneath its tall rafters and the large windows that covered the walls on both sides, I had my first culinary experience in the area. The Lobster Revelation Once, I was a lobster hater. I thought that a lobster was the least appealing of sea creatures, being little more than an aquatic creature that has no flavor.  A whole lobster was just a lot of work for no real taste. My experience changed dramatically with the wonder of the Portland Lobster Roll. I had the buttery, soft, and fresh buns, and delicious homemade lobster dressing on each roll.  Along with a bowl of clam chowder that was creamy and full of brine, it was the best thing in New England. The next day, I discovered another type of local genius at the Holy Donut. It is a "closet-sized" donut shop that features a "Maine [mashed] potato" as its secret ingredient.  This potato gives the donuts their incredibly moist, dense texture and flavor.  After sharing a [dark chocolate] donut and a [fresh-squeezed] lemon donut on a bench by the harbor, I saw a larger freighter passing through the morning fog. It was a sweet beginning to continue my trek north. Mastering Slow Travel From Portland Maine To Bar Harbor Through Route 1  Leaving the Portland area behind, I started heading north. The GPS wanted me to go back to I-95, but I went along the less popular Highway 1. The road quickly became a narrow, two-lane, winding road.  I continued to go through nearly empty dense pine forests. Some of the open areas had light-coloured wooden houses. It was a drive that forced us to take in all the little stuff. The light on a weather vane! The woodsmoke mixed with salt air! Now, this is the perfect kind of trip you can plan for your last-minute spring break.  Maine is also one of the best places to visit in the fall and winter, thanks to its apple orchards and crimson colors.  Moreover, it is among the top spots to see the Northern Lights in the USA.  1. Finding Flannel In Freeport My first stop was Freeport, which changed from a dying industrial mill to a shopping centre. It is also the home to the 'mecca of plaid,” L.L. Bean. The company began as Leon Leonwood Bean’s attempt to keep hunters’ feet dry, and is now an outdoor industry giant.  The Freeport campus is large, with separate buildings for hunting, fishing, and skiing.  After wandering through aisles of rugged gear, I came out "dressed the part" in a nice green and blue plaid shirt.  I also slipped into Sea Bags, where old sailcloth is recycled into trendy nautical totes, showing that Maine’s maritime history is also a part of its contemporary economy. 2. Naval Giants And Lobster Jams  Continuing north, I crossed the Kennebec River and entered Bath. The city is not dominated by tall buildings, but by the enormous cranes at Bath Iron Works.  Since 1890, this shipyard has constructed close to 5,000 vessels, including the most advanced stealth destroyers for the Navy.  The hulking ships at the shipyard reminded me of the industrial history of the state. In the city of Woolwich, there is another type of giant. At the Taste of Maine restaurant, there is a 70-foot giant lobster. This creepy installation is the perfect precursor to the traffic jam I was about to encounter in Wiscasset. Wiscasset is the prettiest town in Maine, and food lovers know it for the traffic jam it creates with Red's Eats.  This food trailer with a striped awning is in a prime location, and the line is over a block and a half long.  After a 45-minute wait, I received my bun, and to my surprise, there was so much lobster on it that it was nearly impossible to see the bun. 3. Harbors And Hidden Gems On The Way From Portland Maine to Bar Harbor While technically off Route 1, any coastal trip would require a stop at Boothbay Harbor. The town's history speaks through its winding, narrow streets, lined with aged buildings that tell their stories. Before the Cow sat on a souvenir. After a jam, toy, and gift shop stroll, I made the encounter with coastal popcorn at the bench with haywire lobster traps, while the fleet of skiff passengers was in a hurry. Pure Maine's untidy delight jingled at me. The Hunt For Local Flavor Driving up Lincolnville became a search for more local and primarily lobster-filled McLaughlin’s Lobster Shack, and some new chips.  The gulls at the bay skimmed the water and the salt and mud scent left with the tide as I pulled the slaw and fries shrimp dinner up to the table under the sun. 4. Engineering Marvels And Military Shadows While driving towards Bucksport, my journey brought me to a massive engineering structure, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge.  The majestic cable-stayed bridge, with its webbed steel-and-cable strands, also features a tower with an observation deck at 437 feet. The elevator ride to the top of the bridge is a mere minute, and the view is a breathtaking 360-degree sight of the river valley, the Bucksport Village, and the Fort Knox granite walls. The Other Fort Knox Maine's Fort Knox is unlike its gold-named counterpart in Kentucky.  This fort defended the Penobscot River Valley from British Navy invasions in the mid 1800s.  I spent an hour exploring 144 acres while using our phone flashlights to navigate what one reviewer called a “catacomb of dark, forbidding tunnels'' beneath the walls.  The massive black cannons that never saw combat remain overseers to the river as silent sentinels. 5. Destination: Bar Harbor And Acadia  After exploring leisurely for 175 miles over 9 hours, I arrived at Mount Desert Island.  I checked into the historic Bar Harbor Inn, which sits along Frenchman Bay.  The next day, I started my "Down East" pace by walking along the Shore Path (1.5 miles), which leads past the “cottages” (the term used by locals to describe their sprawling Gilded Age mansions). I also visited prehistoric formations like Balance Rock. It is a glacial erratic that has been precariously balanced on the shore for more than 10,000 years!  The Wilds Of Acadia  Just up the road from my hotel was Acadia National Park, my favorite among the Maine national parks.  This majestic national park has 47,000 acres of stunning granite peaks with ocean views.  I spent the day hiking part of the park's 120 miles of trails. The carriage roads of the facility were amazing.  To end my adventures, I went to Atlantic Brewery and their BBQ restaurant. I had Mainely Meat there (yes, that is an accurate description)!  For dessert, I enjoyed a flight of locally brewed ales, which were a perfect nightcap!  The blueberry ale was sweet and highlighted Maine's most famous crop. However, the highlight was the Bar Harbor Real Ale, a nutty brown ale with an enormous malty backbone.  The Real Ale complemented my platter of slow-roasted and smoked meats, which were my perfect "last supper" in the woods. Overall, the Portland Maine to Bar Harbor was a fulfilling experience with nature and great food.

Orlando is one of the best family vacation spots in the USA. Furthermore, Tampa to Orlando is a favorite road trip for couples, as the romantic experiences in Orlando are diverse.  Also, Orlando has Cocoa Beach, and it is home to the iconic Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios. It is the paradise of theme parks.  So, no wonder my kids included Orlando in the list of the coolest destinations for family road trips in the USA. I traveled extensively across Jaffna, the Tamil heartland of Sri Lanka. The Delft Island, a boat ride away, offered the most historically and culturally enriching experience during my entire Jaffna trip. Yes, the day trip to Delft Island was a bit rushed, as you have to catch the 8 AM boat from Kurikadduwan Jetty. Otherwise, your entire day will be ruined. However, after traveling 30 kms off the coast of Jaffna, Delft Island unfolded its mystery before my eyes. Overall, it is a limestone and coral island that has all the drama. At the same time, there is something very authentic about this island. Local history and culture exude through every corner. That is what won me over as a follower of the TravelDownUnder principles. Here is more in this travel guide. I will begin with where Delft Island is located and the modes of travel to and around Delft Island. Then, I will talk about its history, significance, and things to see. Where Is Delft Island? Delft Island is in the Palk Strait, and it separates Southern India from Sri Lanka. It is a small island with a maximum width of 6 km and a length of 8 km. With such a tiny landscape, it is surprising to find out how much the island has to offer to the visitors.  How To Visit Delft Island From Jaffna? As I have mentioned, if you include a visit to Delft Island in your Jaffna travel itinerary, you have to be very particular about your timings. You have to reach Kurikadduwan Harbour at least by 7:30 AM to catch the ferry at 8 AM. To reach the harbour, you will have to take bus 776 from the Jaffna Bus Station, or you can take a tuk-tuk.  The bus ticket costs LKR 90, and the tuk-tuk ride costs LKR 2000. Furthermore, the return ferry from Delft Island starts at 2:30 PM. Once you reach the Kurikadduwan Jetty, you will get the bus to Jaffna. Since then, the island has gone through various reigns, including the Portuguese, Dutch, and finally the British colonial periods. As you walk through the roads graced by palm trees and the sea breeze touches your cheeks, you will find how history speaks here, through the ruins, dirt roads, coral walls, and quaint villages. You suddenly start missing your home, especially the afternoons of summer vacations, when time was simpler. There is a rustic charm here that you cannot miss. The locals here are very hospitable. However, the only thing I missed was that there were no restaurants. So, if you are planning a food tour in Jaffna, Delft Island can be a disappointment. Still, here are more reasons to visit this beautiful coral island. Delft Island: A True Hidden Gem And In Close Encounter With Nature After Lonely Planet named Sri Lanka the best travel destination in the world in 2019, Colombo and Kandy became overcrowded. That’s a big turn-off for backpackers like me. So, it’s important to find a break in the north of the country and visit Jaffna temples and other attractions, where you can experience the spirituality, understand the local people, and most importantly, experience the story of human resilience. This is because this part of the country is still rebuilding after the civil war ended in 2009. Delft Island. Jaffna takes these humane aspects and the rawness of Northern Sri Lanka to a new level. In this age of 5G, Delft Island still has 3G connections. Also, the rise in sea levels still impacts the crops, ancient sites, homes, and the entire livelihood of the island. So, when I started exploring the island, I had to walk through the ankle-deep water in the fields. I had no problems in cherishing the experience as everything reminded me of my home.  Stories That Make Delf Island Fascinating Ancient Tamil legends and forgotten colonial ambitions have intertwined in the landscape and livelihood of Delf Island. Moreover, you have to listen to the inside stories here if you enjoy a good mix of history and local folklore. 1. The Growing Stone  There is a limestone outcrop on the island that keeps growing physically. Now, scientifically, it is the calcite and coral deposits that are to be blamed for the growth. However, for local devotees and the followers of Lord Mahadeva like me, it is a Swayambhu Lingam. This self-manifested form of Lord Shiva resembles Nakathampiran, or a multi-headed cobra. I made some offerings there, following the local customs, and had my moments. 2. The Giant’s Footprint Nobody Remembers The indentation close to the Sarapiddi area grabbed my attention. It was around 40 inches in length. There is a local belief that this is the left footprint of Lord Hanuman. Some even say that it is the footprint of Lord Shiva. Nevertheless, a similar indentation, resembling the right foot of the same identity, can be found on the Neduntheevu island. 3. The Wild Ponies And Their Secret Lives The Portuguese and the Dutch brought the wild ponies here. These feral ponies are the descendants of the European mares and Arabian stallions. They grew in numbers and were celebrated during the time of Lieutenant Nolan. He conducted a huge horse-breeding program. By the end of the British Era, most of these ponies were abandoned, and today they are a protected species of the island. So, you cannot take them outside the island. 4. The King Vedi Arasan Vedi Arasan, or the King of Firecrackers, was a celebrated Mukkuvar king here. He was the helm of the pearl trade in the Palk Strait. Furthermore, local stories suggest that the Dutch Fort was built on the foundation of the king’s ancient palace. 5. The Pigeon Cote Or The Dove Cote  The Pigeon Cote or the Dove Cote near the ruins of the Dutch Hospital is a witness to the colonial past of the island. It is 2 meters in length, and it shows how pigeons used to function as the physical internet connection. They were trained, and they used to fly between the Jaffna Mainland and the Delft Island. Though the pigeons were used to carry military dispatches, they were also used for the dissemination of personal letters. 6. The Massive Baobab Tree  The Baobab Tree is a telltale of how Arab traders enjoyed supremacy in this region. The hollow in the trunk of this ancient tree is large enough to accommodate two people.  Furthermore, prisoners were often kept inside the big hollow during transition.  What Are The Things To See In Delft Island, Jaffna? Delft Island may be small in size. However, its diverse cultural and historical attractions will keep you busy. However, these are the attractions you must not miss. The Portuguese And Dutch Fort  This fort is one of the most prominent attractions on Delft Island. It is a free place to visit. The Portuguese built this fort, and then the Dutch occupied it. Moreover, this fort has a coral and limestone structure. So, it stands out because of its unique architecture. The Baobab Tree  The Arab merchants brought the giant baobab tree in the 16th century. You suddenly feel that you are in Africa. The Old Dutch Hospital And Pigeon Nest  The Dutch built this hospital, and in the early 1900s, it became an administrative center. You can still see an inscription of the British Emblem on the Courts. Furthermore, the Pigeon cote or pigeon nest near the hospital shows how pigeons used to function as messengers between Jaffna Mainland and Delft Island. Where To Eat And Drink On The Delft Island? Kandy has been in the news recently for the last-over clincher between Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the last ICC T-20 World Cup tournament.  It is also good to see Kandy slowly getting its rhythm back after the major disruption in the beautiful Colombo-Kandy-Ella-Badulla railway due to the impact of Cyclone Ditwah in the latter part of 2025.  With a man-made lake at the epicenter, Kandy, in a bowl of mountains, was home to the last rulers from the Kandyan empire.  Today, it continues to play an important role in the politics, economy, and culture of Sri Lanka as the capital of the Central Province.  Sri Lanka is full of contradictions. From the rich Tamil Culture in Jaffna and the abandoned Buddhist ruins at the Ritigala Forest Monastery, to the bustling city of Kandy, it’s like visiting different countries with a few miles of traveling.  Moreover, Kandy is just 20 km away from Gampola, the home to the famous Ambuluwawa Tower, the symbol of natural diversity and religious inclusivity in Sri Lanka.  Hi, in today’s blog, I will talk about how to reach Kandy, the things to do in Kandy, where to stay, where to eat, and more.  How To Reach Kandy?  Kandy, one of the major cities of Sri Lanka, is easily accessible. If you are a budget traveler and a believer of the LowDownUnder Travel philosophy, you can take a local bus or train for the journey.  1. The Kandy Railway Station: The Major Gateway The Kandy Railway Station is the main gateway to the city if you are traveling from other parts of the island.  Also, this railway station on the beautiful Kandy to Ella line still exudes a colonial charm and shows Victorian influences in its architecture.  A train ride from Colombo to Kandy takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes, and based on the class, the ticket prices cost between LKR 300 and 1200.  You can even take a train on the Kandy to Ella route to explore the tea plantations, mountains, and the highland region.  However, being one of the most scenic railway routes in the world, tickets for these trains are always in high demand.  You can check out the available tickets at the official website of the Sri Lankan Railways. Tickets for a date get sold out even 1 month before.  2. Colombo To Kandy Bus  If you cannot book trains to reach Kandy. Don’t get disheartened, as buses are available from the Bastian Mawatha Bus Station in Colombo.  You can take an ordinary or AC intercity bus to reach Kandy from Colombo. The distance is around 120 km and the travel time is approximately 3-4 hours.  Also, the ticket prices start from LKR 360.  What Are The Things To Do In Kandy?  Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. So, no wonder that it offers a good mix of colonial history, spiritual experience, and the serenity of the Kandy Lake.  Also, Kandy is home to the quintessential Singhalese food. I found the delicacies in Kandy to be way creamier and milder than the fiery food in Jaffna.  Nevertheless, I will talk about what to eat in Kandy a little later, and for now, let’s explore the things to do in Kandy and enjoy a mixed bag of experiences.  1. Visiting The Royal Botanic Gardens Hours Open: 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM Entry Fee: LKR 200 for Locals, LKR 3540 for Foreign Visitors From Kandy City, you can take a short tuk-tuk ride to reach the Royal Botanic Gardens. It is home to more than 4000 plants and covers an area of 147 acres.  A green oasis in the overwhelming city landscape, it also has an arboretum and decorative flower beds.  My favorite, however, was the majestic palm tree avenues. However, as the day grew, it got crowded by social media content creators.  Furthermore, there are giant bamboo trees. Another popular photography spot in the national park is the Mahaweli Ganga River suspension bridge. However, more than five people cannot get on the bridge at a time.  So, you may have to wait in a queue if you desperately want a photo for your socials.  Moreover, you will see bats hanging from trees, chipmunks, and monkeys in the botanical gardens. And don’t miss the Spice Garden here.  Also, if you feel hungry, you can buy drinks and snacks from the stalls inside and the local vendors outside the park. 2. Exploring The Udawattakele Forest Reserve Hours Open: 6 AM to 6 PM Entry Fee for Foreigners, LKR 830, For Locals: LKR 70  I walked for around 30 minutes to reach the Udawattakele Forest Reserve. You can even take a tuk-tuk ride from the Centre of Kandy.  It has some of the most famous caves in Kandy and diverse fauna.  However, I did not expect that mother macaque monkeys would welcome me with their babies clinging to them.  After the grand entry, I chose the circular route around the park as I wanted to see the religious caves, the bathing pond, and the city viewpoint.  The Route  The green canopy stands in humility as you advance on the route, and now you are transported to a different world.  The birds were chirping, and I could hear the squeal of monkeys.  However, the highlight on that route was the Liana’s. These tree-sized vines created coils along the oath.  I followed the route upward and reached the City View Point.  The City View Point  From the City View Point, I loved the perspective of Kandy City and Lake. Then, walked further to come across the Cittavisuddhi Lena cave and othe two religious caves.  The cave had beautiful sculptures, paintings, and offerings by pilgrims. These are sacred to the Buddhist people.  However, overgrown trees and the fear of insects and bats deterred me from entering the cave and exploring the two other Buddhist caves.  Despite all the cautions, destiny had something different in store for me. There were leeches all over my legs, and luckily, I was carrying adequate salt to get rid of them.  The fellow tourists also helped to remove the leeches.  3. Visiting The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue The Bahirawakanda Vihara Buddha Statue at the top of a hill is the guardian angel of Kandy. You need to take a short and steep walk to reach the Buddha Statue from the town.  You can even take a tuk-tuk.  Once you reach the statue, you can find the steps behind the magnificent statue and climb to higher vantage points looking over the other side of the city of Kandy.  Moreover, there is a small shop from where you can take trinkets and religious texts. The entry fee was 600 LKR when I visited last.  4. Exploring The Kandy Market I mentioned how an old lady in the Jaffna Public Market was the icebreaker during my trip to Jaffna.  In Kandy, it was the Kandy Market, which made me acquainted with the hilly region of Sri Lanka.  The market was near the Kandy Station. I visited it early in the morning and found vendors selling dried fish, bananas, fresh vegetables, and souvenirs.  5. Spending Moments By The Kandy Lake The Kandy Lake, or Lake Kandy, is at the heart of the city and is very close to the Temple of the Tooth.  It is a magnificent man-made lake around which you can take a walk of 2.1 miles. The pathway is called the Cloud Wall, and the highlight of my walk was finding out about the Queen’s bathing pavilion.  This ivory excellence reminded me of the regal past of the Kandy Lake.  I also spotted the ducks, busy schools of fish, and water monitor lizards.  Moreover, there is a well-groomed garden in the center of the lake. When I visited, it was in full bloom.  6. Walking To The Kandy Viewpoint After stretching my legs at the Kandy Lake, I took a short walk to reach the Kandy Viewpoint.  Hiking to the Kandy Viewpoint is one of the most delightful free things to do in Kandy. You can capture panoramic shots of the city from this viewpoint and interact with local hawkers for a meaningful cultural exchange.  7. Visiting The Asgiri Maha Vihara Pirivena - Buddhist Stupa And Temple If you are a Buddhist or someone eager to learn about the religion, visiting the Asgiri Maha Vihara Pirivena is one of the best things to do in Kandy.  This stupa is very close to the city, and I took the stairs across the train tracks to reach the stupa.  For me, the highlight of the stupa was the meditation room on the central floor. The iconographies were grand and meaningful.  Furthermore, the walls there depicted the three stages of decay a body has to undergo after death.  However, I did not yet know what was awaiting me, the dome of the stupa.  Filled with Buddhist artwork, an enormous lotus carving, and eight statues of Lord Buddha, it defined enormity.  The military guide finally took me to the balcony that surrounds the stupa. I found many monks clad in orange robes busy in their rituals, and I also loved the view.  8. Visiting The Temple Of The Tooth A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Temple of the Tooth or Dalada Mandira preserves the canine tooth of Lord Buddha.  It has the Udawaththa Kelaya to the east and the Lake Kandy to the south.  After several invasions and destructions, the temple was finally rebuilt by King Keerthi Sri Rajasinghe, and it is in its current form that we see today.  The temple has beautiful works of ivory, gold, and silver.  More Things To Do In Kandy  Along with being a primary tourist attraction in Sri Lanka, Kandy is also the gateway to many iconic landmarks showing the richness of Sri Lanka in nature and wildlife.  You can take a train ride or a bus ride from Kandy to the Royal Cave Temples of Dambulla. Or, you can attend a wildlife safari in Kaudulla National Park and other national parks of Sri Lanka.  Where To Stay In Kandy? Know The Accommodations I stayed at a hostel near the hillside surrounding the city. It was modest, but the views I got from the room and balcony were amazing.  However, if you are not willing to walk so much, you can choose places such as the Ceyloni City Hotel.  The tariff of this city hotel is around 7500 LKR.  What To Eat In Kandy?  You can choose between vegetarian and non-vegetarian options in Kandy. Balaji Dosai is a nice spot to try vegetarian food, especially dosa.  The Siri Ramya Hotel is the place to try Kottu Roti in Kandy. You can have it as spicy as you want. Also, you can combine them with different types of veggies, eggs, chicken, or mutton.  Another thing you must not miss in Kandy is the snacks available on the bus or train. The fried chips and snacks have a lot of salt and chilli.  However, they are great for the taste buds.  Also, do not forget to try the rice and curry combination at the “famous hole in the wall rice and curry joints” in Kandy.  These offer a nice and filling lunch at the best price.  The Nightlife In Kandy: Where To Drink?  Kandy is not a place famous for its nightlife. However, if you want to cherish some drink after a busy day, you can visit places such as The Stag’s Head Pub and the Royal Bar and Hotel.  Enjoy the beers, cocktails, and your favorite drinks with spicy local snacks, and enjoy the view of the city and lake at night.  Drinking at any of these places will cost you around 790 LKR.
